Italics text - simple question

How would I italicize this?

echo str_repeat("<dd>",$i++).$row_rsspecies['especie'].'<br />';

Maybe something like this?

for( $i = 0 ; $i < $limit ; $i++ )
{
     echo str_repeat("<dd>",$iterations).$row_rsspecies['especie'].'<br />';
}

the following did work but because it is a str.repeat it italicized everything after the first occurrence of 'especie'.

echo '<i>'.str_repeat("<dd>",$i++).$row_rsspecies['especie'].'</i><br />';

So my question is, is there anyway of just italicizing

$row_rsspecies['especie']
