Is SMS ("Text Messaging") possible with PHP?

I got bored yesterday, and thought...

I think that it would be quite easy to code an anonymous e-mailer, where someone enters the address to send it to and the actual message.

Then I started thinking...

Would it be possible to send the message to a mobile telephone as a SMS "Text Message" using the PHP?

Hi,
I think the problem is not to use PHP or any other language, the point is that, to do this you need to have a gateway between your server (or your lan) and GSM network. I don't know how this can be done, but basically I think you should have access to a telco' GSM network through a gateway (a PC with the right software and the right interfaces).
So doing that doesn't seem very simple...

I remember seeing something on some script archive somewhere about interacting with a selection of GSM services - phpclasses.org I think it was. It depends on the telco; a service offered by one here is just an SMTP wrapper - you just email phonenumber@[telco.domain] (once you've signed up of course).

So in pure PHP, the answer is no, then?

I DO NOT want to waste hours of my life messing with sockets for a random idea that I had. I have much better ways of wasting my life.

Once you have the appropriate services available (as weedpacket said some telcos offer a smtp wrapper that makes it easy), you can do in whatever language supporting network programming, PHP is one of those...
But if you don't have these services you can forget the idea 🙂
