Detecting if SQL-server is down in Ms Access 97

Hello,

I have written a front end - back end database in Ms Access 97. The back end DB daily gathers his information from an SQL source. For updating the data, I first run a bunch of delete queries and after that I run a bunch of update queries to fill in the data again. The problem is that if the SQL server is down or when something is wrong with the connection, all data are erased and no new data are added, so the whole DB system is down. Is there a way to detect first of all if the SQL connections are OK from within Ms Access before I start deleting all data?

I assume there is some sort of DB connection command to the SQL database (I'm calling it connect() for the purposes of this)

Try something like this:

if (connect()) {
   // update database here
}else{
   // pop up an error
}

I have only done a little bit of Access Programming sorry and can't exactly remember how I did this.

I use a connection statement indeed, but the problem is that you get a SQL server login error, which is a non-Ms Access error, and after that you get a SQL server login pop-up, also non-Ms Access! So you can't display a customized error message in Ms Access. Isn't there a way to avoid getting this SQL login error while testing if the server is online?
