convert two images into one file?

Hi,

I have developed a website and now i would like to upload new images. What i would like to do is add a layer with an alpha channel to this image. There is a default hatch wich covers this image. Ni i would like to avoid working with layers in html. Is is possible that i can put this layer on top of the other using PHP.
