looking for a good php book

i am in need of a good book to learn php. My areas of interest are:

all the good stuff. I looked through 2 books already:

PHP Developer CookBook and PHP Developer Guide.

There are plenty of great books out there.

I would recommend the series from WROX, "Beginning PHP for Programmers"

The PHP Bible, by IDG Books

and

PHP and MySQL Web Development by SAMS
dont remember the authors exactly something like
welling and Thomson.

PHP and MySQL Web Development by SAMS is a great book!

Wrox' book is not that great, run a search for wrox on this site and read the article by one of its authors.

i may be one of the authors in question, and i agree with kamy

the "Beginning PHP for Programmers" wasn't very good

and I also disagree with kamy

i don't really like any SAMS books

I don't know if you can buy it anymore, but the book

mysql/php Database Applications is a good read // by Brian Greenspan I think

mySQL/PHP Applications is good too, by Jay Greenspan and Brad Bulgar.

Anyways, I really got frustrated by WROX, "Beginning PHP for Programmers" . Some of the scripts didn't work, CD was incomplete, the programming methods were yucky......

My opinion is if their getting more than one author to write a book, which is mostly the case, all of them must follow the same standards and practices. That way, the book looks and feels smooth.
Reading Wrox is like jumping from one web-tutorial to another on different sites.

i think this is gonna change since wrox is no longer owned by peer info, since they went bankrupt

i have been approached by someone at wiley to write a book for wrox again, it will be The Beginning PHP 5, i'm sure others on this board have been approached also

PHP Cookbook by O'Reily. Not exactly a beginners book but the examples are excellent.

Beginning PHP4 by wrox is a good one IMO!
