how to zip a directory

hi,

i want to take a directory of the many files in it and then zip it.

it doesnt have to delete the directory. i just need to zip it and then download it.

any advice?

well, you can use winzip
www.winzip.com

now if you want to zip the directory using php code..
if you are using a *unix based server, look into tar
so in your shell type 'man tar'
there it shows you how to use tar.
then in your php code you can use the cmd() or system() or exec() fuctions to execute the tar command.

if you are using windows...
i don't know.. but winzip still is an option and you might be able to use cmd(), system() or exec() but i dunno.

thanks for the reply.

what i needed to do is use tar to ball the directory then i needed to used gzip to zip that.

i as trying to do it with out tarballing and was only zipping the files in that directory. once i tarred the dir, it was a snap.

i left this here ecause i saw a few oter posts looking for the same thing and no real answers.

this is on a UNIX machine. forgot to mention that.
