text box question

strange question that is kind of exploritive as well. has anybody ever heard of or seen this idea:

lets say you have 2 command buttons and a text box
you want a user to be able to select a certain part of the text inside a text box and make that text bold, but not the rest of it. or using the other command button u can change the size of selected text to whatever size you have the text box set up to change it. does that make sense? i'll draw a pic if that helps. i just want to know if it's possible and if so if anyone has ideas on how to build it...

thx for any thoughts. i'd rather not use flash to do it if i don't have to because i don't know flash all that great. but if it's just a matter of setting up a js (which i don't know all that well) i could still probly acomplish it and the user wouldn't have to have flash, which would be better for my clients. thanks

it's just javascript and a little php

you can insert text in a textarea with js, I suggest these pseudo code tags
like and for bold

before outputting the text, you would have to replace the tags
by <b> ones

have you seen a phpBB-Board? you select the passage you want,
click the button and the tags are added in front and back like you
want

Sounds like he is looking for a WYSIWYG editor. Standard textboxes do not allow more than one style on the text. You looking for a RTBox perhaps?

Maybe I didn't interpret that right.

u got the right idea, i'm just trying to come up with a good simple way to build a wysiwyg editor for people that purchase a site from me, to edit the content with the most possible ease. haven't thought about rtboxes, i'm not even sure if i've ever used one for anything, what are it's capacities? thx

well, that's only working for HTML-Output of the text, of course,
ie for a board or guestbook
