Get $vars from INSERT

Hi,
This may sound silly, but I need to be able to get the vars from my last INSERT into a MySQL DB.

You see I've got an auto incrementing id field in my table, so I leave that $id field blank when I do my INSERT, but I need that value for another function just afterwards.

I've tried googling but I'm not really sure what I'm asking about :?
