i did this and the 'singles' include stuff ends up cappearing at the top of the page ahead of the header

I think the problem is acually with your table/row/cell tags getting messed up.

As long as you are willing to use SPANs, why don't you format the page with CSS and DIVs. Using tables for page layout is considered bad form and is especially hard for blind users using reading software. Tables should only be used to display tabular data.
