How to do this & what is it called???

Hi...

I am trying to find something via PHP, but I even don't know the term that I need to know to search around... 🙁

This is what I want to do...
I have a Flash movie that calls PHP script in my server...
This PHP script detects IP address of the user via getenv() function... (This is where I am now after going through the PHP manual...)

Now, the PHP script has a variable that contains the user's IP address... and I want to call another Perl script that is sitting in another domain with that IP address to get the result back from that domain, and forward that result back to Flash so that I can display the data to the user's screen after parsing it...

Can somebody tell me what it is called, or what/where I sould look up, or how to do it??? 😃

The IP address of the remote host is in the superglobal variable _SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"].

To call a Perl CGI via HTTP on a remote server, use an appropriate function from the file section of the manual. PHP treats remote URLs as readable files.

So, I can use fopen() function to do that...

So, I get to get closer one more step...

Basically something like this, right???

...
$ip = getenv("REMOTE_ADDR");
$serverURL = "http://www.domain.com/script/whatever.pl?" . $ip;
$fp =  = fopen($serverURL , "r");
...

And, how is it different if I use getenv() function and _SERVER autoglobal???

getenv() does not work in ISAPI mode. See http://www.zend.com/manual/function.getenv.php

ISAPI stands for Internet Server Application Programming Interface. Basically, they are programs (non-cgi executables) written to interact & work with requets to a web server.

Since while I am on the subject... I gotta ask one more thing...

$ip = getenv("REMOTE_ADDR");
or
$ip = _SERVER["REMOTE_ADDR"];

returns the IP address of the users who is browsing the page, right??? I get one problem(?) with it... Maybe it has to do my lack of knowledge in this part...

The thing is that there was one guy who said that he's getting the IP address of the router that he is using instead of the real IP address... Is there any way we could get the real IP address??? Or I am just asking for something that is not doable since the router is taking care of the whole IP thing in his computer on top of the real IP address???

Oh, one more thing... 😃 Is it possible to get the geographical location information from the IP address???

If the user is running through a router that does network address translation, all you can know about the user is the router's address.

You can attempt to resolve an IP address into a domain name by calling gethostbyaddr().

Reliably translating an address into geographic territory is difficult. There are commercial databases that attempt to do so, but they're expensive. See http://www.phpadsnew.com/ for info.
