Handling file uploads, renaming them etc

Hi, im having a problem with file uploading.

Basically I dont know the first thing about it!

I have tried the manula:

And cant make head nor tail of it!

What i basically want to do is allow someone to upload an icon to my server. It has to be .jpg or .gif. And under 3Kb!

I have managed somehow to upload a file but i cant rename it and i can only upload it to a specific directory (the same directory as the PHP file) Its a script i got from hotscrips.com.

Can anyone point me to a tutorial or something that would teach me to:
a) check the file is under 3Kb
b) rename the file
c) check to make sure that the file is either .jpg or.gif
d) finally move the file to a specific directory!!
