How do I group the following with [[:space:]] expression

I have a name field in which the first name is required but I also want to have it so that they can ass there last name (which would be optional) but I'm not sure how to group this properly so that when iI do have my last name there it will submit the form.

(!eregi("^{[a-z-]+[[:space:]]?([a-z-]?)$",} $name))

Only use one set of brackets around the :space:. The second set is the outer set of bracket around the whole expression.

Thanks for you help but i fooled around with it a little more and I ended up with this. And it seems to work fine.
