plain text vs. HTML

I just found out that there is a way to send an email with BOTH plain text and HTML content, and have the email client display the correct one.

1) Does anyone know how to do this?
2) Is it reliable?

Just so you know where I am at: I can send plain text emails fine, and I have the infamous Richard Heyes Html_mime_mail for PHP (though I haven't tried it yet)

What you want to do is called "multipart mime email." (Try searching google for that, which is where I found these couple of links.)
