array problem

hi all

i have two arrays. called $words and $sentence

the $ words array holds individual split words e.g.

one
two
three
four

etc

i want to be able to pick out X number of words from the $word array and stick it into the appropriate location in $sentence array

so e.g. lets say we set $x = 6 (six words per sentence)

assuming there are only 24 entries in the word array we know there will be 4 sentences

so by doing

for ($i=0;$i<=$x;$i++) {
$sentence[$i]."br /";
} // end for 

it should output as follows

one two three four five six // sentence 0
seven eight nine ten eleven // sentence 1
twelve thirteen fourteen fifteen // sentence 2
sixteen seventeen eighteen nineteen // sentence 3
twenty one twenty two twenty three twenty four // sentence 4

can someone help me by showing how i can get x number of words from word array into the sentence array as shown?
it should be such that i can specify the number of words per sentence.

assume youhave input received to make a sentence (from your ex 4 words long ) we call this variable $x

$x=$_POST['num_words'];

if (!is_numeric($x)){
  echo "this value is supposed to be a number!";
}

//get the total number of words
$num_elements=count($words);

$tot_sent=($num_elements / $x);

//assume from your description that you want to create / fill the sentence array before echoing back to the browser

i tried assigning $x a dummy value "one two three four five six"

nothing seems to print out

i wonder why you did echo $the_sentence; why not echo $the_sentence[$ii]; ?? arent you supposed to print the contents of the sentence array?

1. as per your example $x is the number of words, NOT the array of words used to make the sentence...

the value for $x s/b 4 or 5 or 6 or whatever but it MUST be numeric

I added a check to ensure that the value is numeric

2. I assign the value of $sentence[$ii] to the value $the_sentence, since there are several things happening in the line above it...

the ending blank space is trimmed and the <br> tag is added to form a complete sentence with the new line attached

i tried using the following ....

$theWord = "one two three four five six seven eight";

$text = trim($theWord);
$words = explode(" ",$text);

$x=6;

i am just getting blank!

not sure whats going on here

also i noticed that in this case choosing 6 is a problem since the above there are only eight words so eight into six does not go as a proper sentence count.

i think perhaps modulus might be something to use?? since we can tell if the numbers divide properly (remainder == 0)??

at a glance uve assigned
$words = explode(" ",$text);

but in the loop its

$sentence[$yy].=$word[$qq]." ";

also u need to make this change
$count = 0;
for($yy=0; $yy<$tot_sent; $yy++){
//loop through the $words array and place into sentence
for ($qq=0; $qq<$x; $qq++){
//fill the sentence
$sentence[$yy] .=$words[$count]." ";
$count++;
} //end $qq for loop
} // end $yy for loop
//show the sentences

adding the count variable because otherwise the inner for loop will restart from 0 and u will get $words[0] instead of $words[5] in the second iteration (when $x = 4)

i cant believe it! it seems to be working with odd numbers as well so i was wrong about the divisble thing

im so relieved this problem is pretty much over

anyway i need to integrate the printer_draw_text function to this for doing my report script now i dont have to worry about when sentences are too long. the main application for this is for writing a notes are for each printed report but also im thinking i can use this for other fields like addresses and anything else which is too long

i need to be able to somehow increment the Y co ordinates of the printing function to print the next line below. hopefully this isnt too hard.

but dont get too relaxed i may call on you soon as things always go belly up when im involved!
