formatting output

Stupid question here.
I have my webpage taking several fields from a sql database adding and dividing just fine, I am just unsure what I need to do to format the number being outputed to be only 3 or 4 digits. It does fine on some outputs, on other outputs it will spit out 14 digits and I want to limit it to 3 or 4 digits.

try this:

$var=12.12345;
printf ("%.3f",$var);

This will echo 12.123

Thank you very much it works great, I totally forgot the $ in front of the variable name and was off a little in other ways.

A number way of doing it is to use the number_format function

$number = "123.45678";

$new_number = number_format($number,3);

then $new_number will equal 123.456
