I need some Advice

hi Friends

My Aim is to become a website scripting expert.
I want to cater to the demands of the world to build professional websites for business class people, the sites which have shopping carts, Guest books etc etc...

I started learning php through a tutorial downloaded form net
although it is a basic tutorial

As of now I know how to design a page which can Add, modify, Delete and search records from a database...

My question is ...
keeping my aim in mind , what do u suggest me to learn in php next...
and where can i find the tutorials for it...

hope you guys will guide me, and be the ray of light that i have to follow ...

Well, you can continue learning by downloading prepared scripts from hotscripts.com or any other sites and start taking the scripts part by part... This way you will learn the best, especialy if you want to build a shoping cart... :p

Working with database is great, but you should start also thinking about secure codeing practices,

Potential Exploits

Applications that do not correctly validate and/or sanitize the user input, can potentially be exploited in several ways:

Changing SQL values
Concatenating SQL statements
Adding function calls and stored-procedures to a statement
Typecast and concatenate retrieved data

Afterall if creating web applications for profecional sites, security is always got to be a concern.

I got my start in PHP with Larry Ullman's "PHP for the World Wide Web", from Peachpit Press .

You might find it elementary, although it covers (briefly) all kinds of topics. I've also found "PHP and MySQL Web Development" from SAMS publishing, to be quite valuable, and it contains advanced information on both languages, design issues, security concerns, and sample projects for most of 20-odd chapters, including shopping carts and web based email......

Yeah, I ahree with Dale. "PHP and MySQL Web Development", published by SAMS and written by Laura Thompson and Luke Welling is a really good book to get hold of. Teaches a lot of stuff, starting at the very basics, and moves into advanced security and OOP 🙂

http://www.phpdeveloper.org/ These guys are pretty good. They take complex operations and start you off small and build you up to it and explain everything as they go. Has really helped me alot. (But not as much as the fine folks here at phpbuilder.com)

If you are the "self study" type try:
http://php.resourceindex.com/ They have a lot of free ready-made scripts that you can download and tinker with.

Get a job, have everything go to crap one morning, fix it very, very quickly (trust me, you'll learn fast) while the world is beating on your head asking why everything went to crap.

Not only that, you'll develop that world-weary, seasoned, jaded attitude people sometimes confuse with competence.

Oh, and keep an emergency supply of pizza, caffiene, and cookies.

Seriously: build stuff. The best way to learn any computer skill is by doing. I used to teach C/C++ programming in college and those students who worked hard and did the programming aced it, became good programmers, and got jobs. Those who took the course because (back then) they saw high paying programmer jobs in the want ads, but didn't want to pay the dues, didn't get the job. And then there was this one guy who beat up my TA. But we've all been there, eh?

I know security is always got to be a concern, but right now i am not in a position to think abt security as first i have to think of developng some cool stuff and then think abt securing....
(plz do tell me if this approach of mine is wrong)

Buddy, thanx for the useful links they were very informative, but I think beeing at diffrent places at the same time will confuse me ...
any ways seeng the responce i got from this site, I feel like I wont be needing anything else to support me on my journey of reaching my destination

I will definately lookout for a job when iam finished learning.

All you guys have boosted up my morale and now i think i can reach my destination much faster with the help of you guys
soon i will be posting all the things i am learning in php and hope you guys will surely comment on it and suggest better ways to do it ....
