sum(column name) function = resource id#4

What is wrong with this code? Im trying to get the total value out of a column and every time I get a resource id #4 error. what does this mean and how do I fix it.

here is my code.
mysql_select_db("database");
$query = "SELECT sum(sellPrice) FROM inventory where status='Completed'";
$result = mysql_query($query);
$totalValue = $result;
echo "The total value of products sold thus far: = $";
echo $totalValue;

you can't just echo out $result like that since it is a results array, you need to fetch the array use

while ($row = mysql_fetch_array($result))
{

How come the total value of the array is now blank? Nothing is being displayed as the total...

that's odd. there's no error in the sql statement but no value is displaying either. Does this mean that the array is empty? I know there are values in the database, I can view them, but why does it seam like their not working in the sum function?

Ok this is getting annoying. Im getting the result of there is something there but I still can't pull it out. AHHH... What variable is it that would display the sum of that column?

since you are selecting AS total, it would be $row['total']

not sure what the problem is, do you have access to phpMyAdmin, if so take the select statement and paste it into it and run the sql to see if it works that way

$queryc = "select sellPrice from FROM inventory where status='Completed';";
$resultc = mysql_query($queryc) or die(mysql_error());

$total = 0;
while ($rowc = mysql_fetch_array($resultc))
{
$total= $total + $rowc['sellPrice'];
}

echo "This is the Total: " . $total;

Finally.... Thanks soo much for the help I greatly appreciate it. I still don't understand why it didn't work untill now as it was the same code but here is the code that did execute properly.

						if (mysql_num_rows($result) == 0)
						{

						}
