I need to develop a calendar and booking system using I guess php and a mysql database in order that my clients can enter dates when they would like to stay in my accomodation and receive notification by email or on screen, informing them of whether the dates are free or not. Would any one have an idea of where I would start, or resources on the net.

Sounds like you've come to the right place.

PHP/MySQL are very powerful tools when it comes to building interactive web content, they are some of the simplest and most power methods out there. Unfortunatly it sounds like you are starting from scratch and need to "learn it all" asap? well phpbuilder is packed full of articals and forums that can help you right along. The PHP/MySQL tutorial that I first used years ago has dissapeared into oblivion (as it should have because it was PHP3) but other resorces you may want to try are webmonkey's MySQL and DEFINITLY the two best resorces php.net and mysql.com

Well, you're right to an extent, I am new to php and other scripting languages but I have done a few mail forms for a flash site, but I am toying with the idea of either using php and a mysql database or whether to hard code it, and use a php script to change variables in flash that could then influence say the colour of a particular date. I reckon this could work; an Irish way round??

Changing dates could then be done via a mysqlsend.php script to pass the value; dateAvailable or dateNotAvailable to each date in the calendar thereby addressing the value of the variable in flash.
