PHP vs ASP.NET

Hello!

The company I work for are currently building an application with MSSQL database fronted by PHP. The reason MSSQL was chosen above mySQL was that mySQL doesn't support replication yet.

The Web developer wants to change the front end to ASP.NET.

Our IT manager has asked us to devise a test so we can see which is quicker. I don't know how to do this? Can anyone advise on a test to compare speed..

I want to stay with PHP but the Web developer is a Microsoft fan..

Get a program that benchmarks websites, or time your scripts and see how long they take to execute ( microtime() ) and compare.

Note that you should also be testing under both heavy and normal loads... don't forget thye money you'll be spending to rescript everything too...

Also, teh speed of each might not even be a factor... if the pages are being generated in 0.15 seconds... its going to take the user at least a second or two to download it, so 0.15 seconds is nothing in that case. Heck, the difference will probably be miniscule anyway, 0.10 seconds and 0.15 seconds doesn't really matter now does it?

Consider which has a better feature set for your particular project as well, and which is going to be easily maintainable and more robust for you guys in the future.

Consider costs too... Apache + PHP is a lot cheaper than IIS + ASP.NET...

woh ok lets start with the results... neither asp.net nor php will blow anything out of the water with execution speed, you should be more worried about coding speed.

the server and setup will be the deciding faction in which executes faster.. a winXP IIS server and asp will execute code faster than a winXP apache using cgi-mode non-mod_php

if your developers are better at coding with asp then go asp, if your developers are better at coding in php then stick with php... if you know php now its probably not worth the time to learn asp

if you aren't really programmers at all and just kinda know enough to get by, and would'nt notice the difference between them, then you should choose which ever one makes the higher ups the most happy and stick with it

i think php's syntax and function calls are more better like than asp anyday, asp is just more confusing in my opinion, but then again i know more php than asp so im biased to begin with

Take a look at openSTA.

It allows you to record test scripts using your program in a browser. Then you can replay the script or scripts as tasks. For each task you can specify the number of users, number of users within each batch, time between each batch and time between each user, thus simulating heavy load etc.

When completed you can see the execution time for each page request etc.
