string manipuation

ive just added a regestration page to my site, but i want to make sure everyone name looks nice. i also issue them with a messanging name:

for example a user will input this into 2 different fields

james
Forrester

i need something to convert that into this:

James
Forrester

(corrected the first letter) and then also how can i snip the first letter of the James so i can make the mail address look like this:

J-Forrester

how would i go about replacing whitespace with '.'s?

ie

'Reality Creations' -> 'Reality.Creations'
