Date Trouble

I am using the date function to do date format conversions , the problem is when i give a date which is lesser than the year 1970 it automatically converts to 01-jan-1970 , like i gave in the format 1960 -feb- 02 it converted it to 01-jan-1970 , is there any way i can avoid this

try using the strtotime() function
EX:

date("....",strtotime($your_date));

The manual page for date() explains it:

Note: The valid range of a timestamp is typically from Fri, 13 Dec 1901 20:45:54 GMT to Tue, 19 Jan 2038 03:14:07 GMT. (These are the dates that correspond to the minimum and maximum values for a 32-bit signed integer). On windows this range is limited from 01-01-1970 to 19-01-2038.
