phpmyadmin help

hi guy.I have installed on my linux OS
mysql server 4.0..it work in command line but if use phpmyadmin it says to me:

impossibile caricare l'estensione MySQL,
controlla la configurazione di PHP.

in ENG something like:
unable to load mysql estension,
control the php config...

which is the problem??

did you installed PHP with the --with-mysql option ???
look at phpinfo() for an answer
