PHP and images

Can anyone out there point me in the direction of some tutorials about PHP and Images? I know that sounds pretty vague, but lets say that I would like to use images and overlay captions and speech bubbles, but using a generic class to do so.

The manual is not the best and as for the web, I look but I no find.
