What's it called when...?

Hi guys,

I have been learning PHP for quite a while, but not come across this in the source that I am learning it from. It's commonly used and that's all I know:p

Anyway, on some sites (mostly VB forums) I see this in the URL:

http://www.website.com/showthread.php?threadid=16794

Sorry if this is a simple aspect of PHP, but I have not got a clue what this is called in PHP, or how it works. It's the bit after the question mark that really throws me...

Would somebody please tell me what it's called, so I can try to learn it in one of the PHP books I have? Or if someone is willing to extend that, I would be extremely greatful🙂

The bit after the question mark is a variable that you pass from one php script to another. You can pass more that one variable... the next are separated by &. So let's say you have this script

<?php
$a = "hello";
$b = "goodbye";
$c = true;
// put a link to the next script
echo "<a href=\"samplescript.php?var1=$a&var2=$b&var3=$c\">
?>

Now, samplescript.php might look like this

<?php
if ($var3 == true)
  {
  echo "$var1";
  }
else
  {
  echo "$var2";
  }
?>
