undefined varible

help! every time i us a scirpt that works only is a variable has already been set i get this error:

Warning: Undefined variable: fields in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\db_tools\create_table.php on line 7

eg:

<?php
 if ($tree)
   {
    echo("tree");
   }
   else
   {
   echo ("monkey");
   }
?>

will say
Warning: Undefined variable: tree in c:\inetpub\wwwroot\db_tools\tree.php on line 2
monkey

can anyone please help me

Try to replace

if ($tree) with if (isset($tree)), e.g.

<?PHP
    if (isset($tree)) {
        if ($tree) {
            echo $tree;
        } else {
            echo "monkey";
        }
    } else {
        echo "monkey";
    }
?>

Hi,

besides that it would be a good thing to always check if variables you expect to be set are really set. This would be cleaner and might help you to prevent bugs.

ok Im a quite new to learning php. I had a few scripts at ish.biz a free php host. But they have been down for over a week now. I have tried to install a few servers including apache and bad blue and can get the phinfo.php up but keep getting a undefined variable for the generate button on a simple form. I know the script works as it worked when hosted on a few free hosts, just cant stand there popups. I think its not the server since its every server I have tried. I added the line above to error reporting in the phpini and got a blank page. Im thinking that php has to be set up to do things but im lost as to what.

register_globals is off per default. You can either set register_globals to On in php.ini and leave your code as it is or you can try the above code 🙂

Thank you very much I have php working at least for the code generators now. I also activated gd as I wanted to do a button maker. Looking at my phpinfo I see that it has freetype enabled am I correct? phpinfo

Thanks because I am having problems with loading fonts. I get an error of
Warning: Could not find/open font in c:\apache\htdocs\ggen\button.php on line 17

Here is the part of the script that deals with that

$font2 = 'fonts/' . $fontname . '.ttf';
imagettftext ($image, $fontsize, $angle, $fhpos, $fvpos, $titlecolor, $font2, $titletext2);

I have made the script echo the info in $font2 so I could see it is the right info. I keep thinking I should have had to install something to get this to work. Here is a link to the script

this seems to be a bug in php versions up to 4.3.1. You might want to upgrade to 4.3.2.

I did a little more checking as to what is going on. I attempted to open the file with fopen() and fread() and was able to open and extract information. Didnt do me any good as it was all symbols but at least I know that the path is right.

what if you use

the absolute path,e.g.

"c:/...

or c:\...
or c:\\...

The gd lib might need it as an absolute path. I can't test it now 🙁

Sorry I have forgotten to give some details of what I am running.

Windows XP Home
Apache 1.3.7
php 4.3.2 running as a apache module since last night when I read it was better for security to do so. Ran the php installer the first time but un-installed and changed to the zip setup for the extensions and extras.

This is the first time I have ever set up a server or php and this is all I have set installed. I have only made small changes to the php.ini. Turned globals on and turned off uploads and added a few extensions by uncommenting them. When this script was on a host I had to change permissions but haven't figured out how to do that or if its necessary.
