Validation of fields

Hi, I have been scanning the newbie entries but cannot find out how to validate a particular field. I have a user ID which is four digits long, no alpha numeric characters, numbers only. How can I check that firstly, the variable sent from the form is numeric and secondly that it is a set number of characters. ( in this case 4)

Can anyone help please?

check out strlen and is_int in the function list.
