Image Upload & Resize

I need to upload an image, which is not a problem, but then i need to resize it either as i upload it, or as i display it on the web page. I think that doing it as you upload it would be better as the files would be smaller, and all around the same size. would this be ther better option or not?

Also does anyone have any example code on the subject, i have searched but it all seems too complicated.
