Pulling out a domain from a full URL . . .

Say we have a $_SERVER['HTTP_REFERER'] from :
http://yahoo.com/hello-world/index.php?id=1

How would I pull out only the yahoo.com ?

I've tried doing some eregi_replace, but I can't seem to get only the domain name, and nothing else.
I'm sure this is something which people look for often, but I can't seem to find the answer anywere (maybe im not even looking for the right thing).

$domain = substr($temp,0,strpos($temp,"/"));
echo $domain
?>
