best web server for intranet

for an intranet setup which ones is better for PHP/MySQL and why? i am looking from the point of view of security.

Apache

at the moment Win98 is being used on the network

is their a seriously justifiable reason to use win2k for the network?

the network has also got internet access so i want the intranet pages to be protected from outsiders

please comment on this

I am currently using apache for our company intranet on a win2k box and I have had no troubles what so ever.

I have heard horror stories from folks trying to get all to cooperate under windows but I had no trouble.

I would agree that you will have much more flexibiliy and security using an Apache server. As an alternative to PWS, though you should consider IIS. I've ran PHP/SQL on both and was pleased with both. Currently I'm running IIS, because I switched to Windows 2003 server and I wanted to test it out.

IIRC, PWS was so embarassing from a security point of view that Microsoft didn't even recommend it as of 98SE.

But, then I'm a Apache/'Nix geek.

IIS has gotten lots of bad attention as well. Apache, however, will also have an issue with security now and then.

How big an intranet? Put a Pentium II & mobo in a toaster case with a HDD, add NetBSD and a HDD, Apache/mod_php, and remain vigilant. You'll never have to upgrade hardware, unless the toaster has a lot of crumbs still in it....

i think i will stick to apache since i have been testing on it already and figure that learning to config PWS is a waste of my time anyway.

the system will serve around 6 people on a office LAN

IIS = if you want to be hacked easily
Apache = nice, fast one file config, mostly run every web site on the net..well its high 🙂 higher than IIS
