Help with $_REQUEST

I'm upgrading all of my code to use the more secure $REQUEST, $POST, $_GET, etc. to get variables from outside PHP. But I'm having trouble.

In a particular document, I pass $s via a form post and then use $s throughout the document. Rather than change it all over the place, at the top of the document, I say this:

$s=$_REQUEST['s'];

. . . but it ain't working. The page doesn't recognize $s at all.

What am I doing wrong?

And you've done some standard debugging?

var_dump($_POST);
var_dump($_GET);
var_dump($_REQUEST);
echo "S var is ".$_REQUEST['s'];
