GD/Freetype

PHP 4.3.2 has a GD version builtin. I want to install FreeType in order to use true type fonts. Which version of FreeType do I have to install? FreeType1 or FreeType2? I recompiled PHP with FreeType2 and now get segmentation faults when using png's. jpg's don't work at all. 😕

Did you also download and install the most recent versions of libjpeg, libpng and all the other libraries freetype depends on ?
