scanning images with PHP and twain

hi,
i have seen some coldfusion custom tags allowing the feature of being able to scan images. the device needs to be TWAIN complient. my question is: is it possible in php to create an interface which directly talks to the scanner, get the image scanned and then upload it to the file system of the server?

any help will be greatly appriciated...

maybe you can do it with a so called 'com' call, taka a look @

the machine the script is running on must be attached to the scanner
