Force Download

I'm trying to have a gallery (linke an image gallery) with links (in the form of thumbnails) that, when a user clicks them, asks them to download/save the image instead of displaying it in the browser. Is this possible? if so, how?

If you send a header content that says / it will open up a save as... dialog box.
