mySQL abnormally slow

Hello,

I need some help with a distressing problem. mySQL is abnormally slow for some reason. Queries work, and no error messages are given at any moment, yet simple insert statements into blank 4 column tables take ages for some reason.

the system is running:
slackware
mysql 4.0
php 4.3.0

dual Tualatin 1.26 with 1 gig of ram.

I can post my my.cnf (basically using my-medium.cnf with innodb and bdb skipped) and php.ini if required - but I've run these before and it would never ever take this long...

Actually, I've just noticed that tables with more than 10 rows are the slowpokes. Where can I solve this? I'm sure it's a setting somewhere...

They are only slow via PHP though, if I describe the tables through the console it's lightning fast as usual.

The ANALYZE TABLE, CHECK TABLE, OPTIMIZE TABLE, and REPAIR TABLE statements.

here is the output from one of the culprit tables - these work fine on our other systems...that's the worry.

what about the code ure using to insert into the tables

which types are the columns of ? What do you want to store in the tables ? Did you check if the apache server causes a high load on the server or if the system swaps a lot ?

The load on the server does not hike, I am using phpmyadmin and the delay occurs even while just attempting to view a table's description (by clicking on its link in the left hand frame).

Slow queries is always at 0.
