Image Manipulation

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with PHP's image manipulation tools. I was using GD to create thumbnails of several galleries I had but I noticed some of the images were coming out fuzzy. Is there any way to correct this?

Also, is there a way to make an image a perfect square but not by resizing? For example, if I have a 100x88 image, can I cut it to 88x88? Any help on this is greatly appreciated!

if the thumbnails are coming out fuzzy, i'm guessing you are using imagecopyresized() to resize - instead, use imagecopyresampled() - it does the same, but resamples the image to maintain the quality

I tired that but got the following error:

imagecopyresampled(): requires GD 2.0

I doubt my maintenance people will be willing to upgrade the server software just yet. Any other ideas? Or do you know any way I could upgrade myself easily? Thanks for your help on this!

if you read the php manual page on the function at http://uk.php.net/imagecopyresampled, some people have posted alternative functions (user defined) for when you can't use imagecopyresampled. it's in the comments, at the bottom.
