image conversion

Just wondering, is it possible to convert image formats using just PHP with no back-end programs like ImageMagick or Gimp?

PNG, JPEG, GIF, anything you like 🙂

I am currentely using a script that converts the supported formats to a JPEG-image with 50% compression.

snaack, i thought GD-library was back-end software... guess not.

i understood the question basically as: any built-in php functions that don't require me to install other software on the server. Maybe that's just a question i've been asking myself for a while...

unless i'm reading that reference you posted wrong, you still have to download the library and then compile php with --with-gd to get GD support unless you are using PHP 4.3.0 and above. So if you don't do that, you can't use any of those functions listed. is this somewhat accurate?

In PHP versions older that 4.3.1 you indeed explicitly need to compile the core with GD options..

In PHP4.3.1 GD2.0.1+ comes bundled..

Anyway, GIF support unfortunately vanished from GD1.8+ (due to licence restrictions?)

I get the idea.

I ask because a lot of jobs I could take deal with image alteration. Just wanted to be straight on the requirements of the client.
