order by date question

Hello,
I want to order my database by a colunm that has a date formated like (June, 11)... and I want to order it chronologically.

If I just use:

order by DATE

then is sorts alphanumeric... and that doesnt help.

Anyone know an easy way to do this? I cant change the format of the contents in that colunm.

What datatype is the field containing the date?

I had a problem like that, since i left off the time off the date I orderd by date, and then by the primary key decending... which will place the newest entery for the date at the top and the oldest at the bottom for the same day.
