Building Traffic

Hello everybody,

I am looking to drive traffic to a site that I have built and deployed. I know that there are many ways to drive traffic to your web site...banner ads, popups, traffic services, SPAM (:mad: :mad: ), etc., but what is the best method?

Every time I look for information on this I wind up finding ads for traffic building services, not information about what is most effective.

Well, "best" is opinion. In my opinion, word-of-mouth is the best, but that also gives you less, normally. Things that guarantee page impressions are much better (i.e. http://www.nomorehits.com/) if you want a ton of hits, but people tend not to pay attention to the page.

Personally I think search engines are your best bet. Make sure you are listed in dmoz, and if you have the cash, it might not hurt to get listed in Yahoo's directory... (although it makes me sick to my stomach that they charge $300 for that). Google will bump you higher in the search listings if you have a lot of other sites linking to yours, so try and get your site listed on other pertinent websites. You can also try Google's adwords program- you set how much you pay per click, and you set the daily maximum so you can set it as low as $0.05 per day... it really gives you a lot of control over your expenses and a lot of good exposure, IMHO.

I'm not sure what the nature of your site is, but you also want to make sure you have something "sticky" on there- so people will want to come back.. something that changes all the time. Providing a lot of good free info about a pertinent topic is also a good way to start getting your name out there... people will find you and refer you to others.

Make sure you have not too many, not too few and they are all relevant. Then, submit to all the free search engines.

Can anyone here give a list (or a link that might have a list) of search engines that are free? I'd like to put my page in some of them. I can't seem to get it on Google (they don't have a submission form for it), but I think it'll work its way in (I'm sure they have spiders that go around to collect sites).

Have a look at Addme. I haven't used it for a while, but it adds you to loads of search engines at once.

Mordecai: I think most are free to add yourself to, but some you might have to pay a bit to get in any decent position.

However, search engines that are worth their salt (ie Google) will find your site anyway. On one of my sites, the logging script always catches agents/robots/spiders/sentinals (😃 ) connecting to my site for indexing.

Google will eventually catch you so I wouldn't worry about that one.

Keywords are the key here make sure to do some research - search for the words tahgt you are thinking of adding to your keywords and see if the reesults are relevant to what you do.

thanks for all of the input. I guess I will wait a few weeks until my logging collects enough search terms that bring people to the site. Then I will add those terms to meta tags and look into submission services.

For fark, all you need are boobies to drive a lot of traffic there.
