A Script's Structure

Ok... to learn, I MUST ask questions. That's just how I am. I'm wanting to start my first "project," meaning a real from scratch script. However (and there's always one of these), I have been asking myself this question for quite sometime:

How are scripts structured?

I know this seems like a stupid question, but when I look at large scale scripts like phpBB and the like, I get really confused. I don't know why this is calling that, why this is going there and the like. Remember I'm a n00b folks :rolleyes:

When I try to answer this question myself I always think everything has to go in order. For example:

A Message Board:
- People register
- Posts go to MySQL
- Script calls up MySQL gets the posts on the page.

Now, I know that's simple, however (there's another one) what if you want to let people edit there posts, creat profiles, etc.

If anyone can help me clear this up, I'd be forever greatful.

This is just me but maybe it can help you out a little bit...
For your phpBB example.. I would start by creating the necessary stuff, posting a topic like you said, having people register, and then having a script call sql to retrieve the data.

I would try to come up with the database structure first before I start, of course more fields get added later its just to start... Then once I have those features down, I start adding more complex stuff, like searching, editing, and attachments..

So in short what I am saying is, start with the barebones of the script, things that must happen, and then from there your code can expand to hundreds and then thousands of lines by adding additional features.
