searching text for html tags and removing new lines

Um, okay. I am presented with a problem that is over my head atm. I think what i need to do is search a body of text for html tags and then remove any new lines found inside. I have been playing around with regex but its over my head for something like this and i cant think of a way to use php functions like preg_match() and eregi() to solve the problem. Can anyone help me out?

becomes
<tag>hahalol</tag>

or do you mean:

<tag
attribute="value">
becomes
<tag attribute="value">

?
