This is not a request for help but a piece of information which may be new to some people. I see a lot of HTML on this forum which lacks any kind of DOCTYPE declaration. I always include a doctype declaration on any web page because it is good practice and ensures that the browser knows what it's dealing with. I've now discovered a further reason to include a proper DOCTYPE declaration and it is: if you do so, browsers are forced to attempt to implement proper CSS standards, ignoring any horrible, buggy proprietary settings the browser may offer itself, so if you want your style settings to work as stipulated by the W3C, make sure you include a full DOCTYPE declaration. Here's an example(XHTML):

<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Transitional//EN"
    "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-transitional.dtd">
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en">

One question ... does that mean that you then have to use XHTML ... for example <br /> instead of <br>, and so on?

You don't HAVE to use the XHTML standard, but it is good practice. Alternatively though you can use the older HTML styles (strict, transitional, or frameset) using the following DOCTYPEs.

HTML 4.1 Strict

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"
            "http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/strict.dtd">

HTML 4.1 Transitional

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Transitional//EN"
          "http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/loose.dtd">

HTML 4.1 Frameset

<!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01 Frameset//EN"
          "http://www.w3.org/TR/1999/REC-html401-19991224/frameset.dtd">
