Virtual host?

Hello!

I am wondering about this:

I have a webserver running (Apache) en created an online store with PHP & MySQL. I got a domain for the site at an ISP, which redirects to my webserver.

Now i would to host someone else's site as well, but this webserver listens to 1 IP, mine. The IP the other person has (which i want to host) resides at a service provider somewhere here.

How do i go about this? Maybe i should use the Virtual host directives which comes with Apache? Should i ask the ISP of the other person to redirect this ip to mine and then setup virtual host to listen to that ip?

Help me see the logic!

I have multiple sites on my box, one IP, utilizing name-based virthosts in Apache. The quid pro quo is that people running non-HTTP 1.1-compliant browsers end up seeing the first site listed in httpd.conf when they input any name that resolves to my IP. If you think a large number of potential users may still be using browsers that don't meet the HTTP 1.1 standard, you may wish to try some other approach. Otherwise, it works pretty well, IMHO....

I read about this some time ago.

So let's say i have a site called www.site1.com and this is linked to the IP i have, and i would like to have www.site2.com linked to the same IP, only with different document-root etc.?

So when people type www.site2.com, they still end up at the same IP, only with different doc-root?

Maybe you can give me an example on how to accomplish this?

From one of our httpd.conf, names changed to protect the guilty. You may use many of the httpd.conf directives in the VirtHost container, thus the "Options Indexes" in site1 config...

Also note that site1 can be accessed as http://www.site1.com or http://site1.com. You'd need a seperate container for each name you wished to be accessible...

Ok,

I think i got the virtual-host thing, but something's still not clear to me.

The site i want to host is registered at some ISP right now. If i set up a virtual host with this same domain name, it won't work i guess, and what about DNS?

That's probably to be read as "DNS will need to point to this new shared IP"....

Somebody at the hosting company should be able to change this easily. If they won't, maybe a new company is needed, or else it's time to learn about BIND as well as Apache....
