referring websites

Is it possible to record the URLs of referring websites into a php script? i would really like to know where people are coming from when they get my site.

The only way that comes to mind is to use cookies ... when ur link is clicked on on ur referrers website as cookie should be created and stored on the users system. then when they reach ur index.php page or whatever page you want you read the cookie and right to your database where they came from based on the value of the cookie ... These are just my thoughts .... anyone else have any good ideas??

'HTTP_REFERER'

The address of the page (if any) which referred the user agent to the current page. This is set by the user agent. Not all user agents will set this, and some provide the ability to modify HTTP_REFERER as a feature. In short, it cannot really be trusted.
