How can you invoke the mail command so that it tried to directly connect with the smpt server instead of trying to deliver it to the local mail queue for delivery?

This is for running in a chrooted environment, so delivering to the local sendmail isn't an option.

the smtp server used is specified in php.ini - as many people with remote hosting can't access this, it's useful to know you can use ini_set to set it on the go

ini_set("SMTP", "smtp.domain.com");

Then does the mail() just automatically use that server to connect directly?
so I could do
ini_set("SMTP", "smtp.domain.com");
mail("[e-mail]", "My Subject", "Line 1\nLine 2\nLine 3");

yup - i've never used ini_set myself mind, but as i understand it that is exactly how it works. easy huh?
