How do you count how many times this thing has been downloaded?

well, for one, you have content AFTER the </html> tag... not a very good idea... dont know whats wrong with the download bar though.

i need to know how to count the number of downloads.

Instead of actually linking to the file that is going to be downloaded link to a page that will then increment a counter variable by 1.

Then once that has been done present the link to the file that is going to be downloaded
