mysql installation

I can not access localhost at port 3306 with root user after I install mysql on windows 2000.

How to test what problem the server have?

When I open WinMySQLadmin.the red signal in on.I do not know how to fix it.

I've also had trouble with mysql installations, in regards to
security, but I am installing on Red Hat 8.0

Anybody know of a high-quality mysql installation guide?
I'd even stoop so low as to ask for a mysql for dummies
until I've had at least 1 successful install.

can you goto the bin directory in the mysql directory and log in from there

If so then you can run the following command

"\s" minus the "" the tcp port will then be displayed
