PHP and/or JAVA

I am new to PHP and would like to find out whether I should use it to develop web applications. I only used Java to do non web based applications. I would like to know whether I should use PHP and/or Java for web application development.

The answer to this question depends on a few things:

What time of Application you are building
Audience and Who will have access to it
Server capabilities of the server you plan to host the application from.
Overall comfort with each language.

The application I will be developing is a web based MySQL database with a rich client interface. The application will be hosted on a Windows 2000 server with Apache as a web server.

The users are regular database users that would be inputting data and retrieving data for reporting purposes. The database is a contract database that would be used to keep track of customer information, contractual information, etc.

Any advice you can provide?

In my opinion that is a perfect setup to build the app in php. I believe it would be a lot easier then trying to build it in java.

Here are some good references for you (if you dont have them already):
1. http://www.php.net/manual/en - php manual find all the information you need (in the way of syntax) for php
2. http://www.devhead.com - good web development site also look in the other forums like General help and newbies for more resources.
