numeric values to string representation

hello,

i don't use php to often, however a friend has asked me if i could create a funtion for him that would take a numeric value, e.g. 123 and write out a string representation of the number, e.g. One Hundred and Three, or 123.40, One Hundred and Twenty Three and Forty.

Has anyone ever done anything like this, or maybe some of the guru's can give some pointers on how to takle this. much appreciated. 😕

This is an aspect of an exercise carried out recently here. The code by Jimson is probably the easiest to apply; to go higher than 999 one would break the number into groups of three digits, convert each group, and attach the appropriate multiplier (thousand, million, etc.); you know which one to apply because the second-to-last group is the thousands, the third-to-last is the millions, and so forth. Two of the programs there do this, but they're deliberately obscure.
