[Resolved] Setting up Mail to test on localhost

I am using a WAMP config. WindowsXP Pro, Apache 2.0.4 and PHP 4.3.2 on localhost.

I am completely new with PHP and servers need a dummies guide to how to set things up so I can test the mail function in my PHP.

Any ideas?

Have a look at this from Google - there are a number of tutorials on the subject.

In addition to this - make sure your PHP.ini is setup like:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = your SMTP server

; For Win32 only.
sendmail_from = and e-mail address

; For Unix only. You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
;sendmail_path =

I have looked through google and the groups.

A lot say change the php.ini to what you have said, and also explain the PHP mail function, but how do I know what I should put into my php.ini.

Ie. what is my smtp server and what is my email address?

I haven't even got that far yet.I understand the concept but don't know how to actually do it. Especially for my config.

First, set up your php.ini like so:

[mail function]
; For Win32 only.
SMTP = localhost
SMTP_port = 25

; For Win32 only.
sendmail_from = [email]emmahodd2@hotmail.com[/email] (or whatever your email address is)

; For Unix only.  You may supply arguments as well (default: "sendmail -t -i").
;sendmail_path =

Next, you need to install a mail server on your computer. When testing this functionality myself, I used MailTraq. It's a professional package, but they have a free version for using on your personal computer. You can get it here.

Hello. I've set it up with Mailtraq as said and edited php.ini.

Trouble is I get the error when I run the page:

Warning: mail(): Failed to connect to mailserver at "localhost" port 25, verify your "SMTP" and "smtp_port" setting in php.ini

Which suggests its still not set up?

Are you actually running MailTraq? It needs to be running in order to process mail...

If you do have it running, did you set up Incoming and Outgoing mail properly? I haven't run it in a while, but if you check the Mailtraq help file there is some good information in there about how to set it up.

I also followed your advice and installed the mailtraq software. When I go to my website, and try to do a 'recover password' to have an email sent to me, it seems to work fine. However, no email ever comes, and when I check the mailtraq properties, it doesnt show that any emails were even sent through it.
