Session doesn't get destroyed when browser is closed

it still doens't work...

session.cookie_lifetime=0
session.gc_maxlifetime=50
session.cache_expire=1

but still the session doen't get detroyed when I (the user) close the browser...

anybody?
I'v searched through 10-20-30 pages but nothing seems to help me give an answer so...

tried it on linux and on winXp...same result...🙁((

I would really appreciate the help...

Maybe anybody had the same problem once...

The session is not destroyed by the user closing the browser. As far as i know, sessions are desroyed automatically by Apache, although you can destroy them yourself with a function, session_destroy() i think. You might have to put a 'log out' button on your site, cos i don't think it's possible for your site to know when a user has closed their browser, or gone on to another site (although i might be wrong on the second point, does a request for the second site come to your server and then get re-directed????).

Whenever I have used sessions the sessions have closed when the browser was closed. I would contact your host and see how they have setup session handling

most sessions come with a timeout value about 20 minutes...this is not affected by closing the browser....

there are two solutions, neither quite right...

place a log out button on the pages...this can be used to fire an event on the server to destroy the session

but you can not guarantee that the use will ever press the button

use javascript and the onUnLoad event to do the same thing...but this will fire every time the user:
unloads a window, closes it
clicks a link
type an address in the URL bar and clicks the go button
selects a link from the history
script loads a new document (page)

so there will need to be careful checking to ensure that the session are destroyed only if the user actually leaves the site...

No, you must have just been very lucky with the garbage collector's timing. There's no way for the server to know the user logged off.

I'm running this on my 'webserver', so...No host or something, the thing is set up by me and it's on the intranet so...

Your first solution, I have it, but indeed, users using the LOGOUT button...= problems so...
Second one, mmmmh, very difficult and too much opportunities that it would go wrong... with the unload thingie...

Any suggestions somebody else?
Because I don't know how is the best way to solve this....
